Christ’s Return
Is there such a thing as ‘the rapture’? Who will see Jesus when He comes? How can I prepare for His return? Let’s explore…
Promises and Predictions
Jesus Himself promises to return. – John 14:1-3 – 1”Let not your heart be troubled; you believe in God, believe also in Me. 2In My Father’s house are many mansions; it if were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. 3And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you to Myself; that where I am, there you may be also.
Christ coming a second time. – Hebrews 9:28 – So Christ was offered once to bear the sins of many. To those who eagerly wait for Him He will appear a second time, apart from sin, for salvation.
When Jesus Is Coming Again
We don’t know the exact day or hour. – Matthew 24:36 – But of that day and hour no one knows, not even the angels of heaven, but My Father only.
Immediately after all the signs have been fulfilled. – Matthew 24:30-33 – 30Then the sign of the Son of Man will appear in heaven, and then all the tribes of the earth will mourn and they will see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of heaven with power and great glory. 31And He will send His angels with a great sound of a trumpet, and they will gather together His elect from the four winds, from one end of heaven to the other. 32”Now learn this parable from the fig tree: When its branch has already become tender and puts forth leaves, you know that summer is near. 33So you also, when you see all these things, know that it is near – even at the doors!
He Is Coming
Christ is coming with clouds and with great glory. A multitude of shining angels will attend Him. He will come to raise the dead and to change the living saints from glory to glory. He will come to honor those who have loved Him, and kept His commandments, and to take them to Himself. He has not forgotten them nor His promise. Ther will be a relinking of the family chain… a little longer, and He will wipe all tears from our eyes. DA 632
Immediately after the gospel reaches the entire world. – Matthew 24:14 – And this gospel of the kingdom will be preached in all the world as a witness to all nations, and then the end will come.
Bringing and End to Sin
Our world is a vast lazar house, a scene of misery that we dare not allow even our thoughts to dwell upon. Did we realize it as it is, the burden would be too terrible. Yet God feels it all. In order to destroy sin and its results He gave His best Beloved, and He has put it in our power, through co-operation with Him, to bring this scene of misery to an end. “This gospel of the kingdom shall be preached in all the world for a witness unto all nations; and then shall the end come. (Matthew 24:14). Ed 264
The Manner of His Coming
In the same manner as He ascended. – Acts 1:9-11 – 9Now when He had spoken these things, while they watched, He was taken up, and a cloud received Him out of their sight. 10And while they looked steadfastly toward heaven as He went up, behold, two men stood by them in white apparel, 11who also said, “Men of Galilee, why do you stand gazing up in to the heaven? This same Jesus, who was taken up from you into heaven, will so co me in like manner as you saw Him go into heaven.”
The Ascension of Jesus
The same Jesus who had walked and talked and prayed with them; who had broken bread with them; who had been with them in their boats on the lake; and who had that very day toiled with them up the ascent of Olivet – the same Jesus had now gone to share His Father’s throne. And the angels had assured them that the very One whom they had seen go up into heaven, would come again even as He had ascended. DA 832
With a shout, angel voice, and trumpet blast. – 1 Thessalonians 4:16 & 17 – 16For the Lord Himself will descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of an archangel, and with the trumpet of God. And the dead in Christ will rise first. 17Then we who are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And thus we shall always be with the Lord.
Heaven at Last!
All come forth from their graves the same in stature as when they entered the tomb. Adam, who stands among the risen throng, is of lofty height and majestic form, in stature but little below the Son of God. He presents a marked contrast to the people of later generations; in this one respect is shown the great degeneracy of the race. But all arise with the freshness and vigor of eternal youth… [Christ] will change our vile bodies and fashion them like unto His glorious body. The mortal, corruptible form, devoid of comeliness, once polluted with sin, becomes perfect, beautiful, and immortal. All blemishes and deformities are left in the grave. Restored to the tree of life in the long-lost Eden, the redeemed will “grow up” (Malachi 4:2) to the full stature of the race in its primeval glory. The last lingering traces of the curse of sin will be removed, and Christ’s faithful ones will appear in “the beauty of the Lord our God,” in mind and soul and body reflecting the perfect image of their Lord. Oh, wonderful redemption! long talked of, long hoped for, contemplated with eager anticipation, but never fully understood. The living righteous are changed “in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye” [1 Corinthians 15:52]. At the voice of God they were glorified; now they are made immortal and with the risen saints are caught up to meet their Lord in the air. Angels “gather together His elect from the four winds, from one end of heaven to the other” [Matthew 24:31]. Little children are borne by holy angels to their mothers’ arms. Friends long separated by death are united, nevermore to part, and with songs of gladness ascend together too the City of God. GC 644, 645
Every eye will see Him. – Revelation 1:7 – Behold, He is coming with clouds, and every eye will see Him, even they who pierced Him. And all the tribes of the earth will mourn because of Him. Even so, Amen.
What Jesus Will Do When He Comes
Reward everyone according to his works. – Matthew 16:27 – For the Son of Man will come in the glory of His Father with His angels, and then He will reward each according to his works.
Give each saint a crown of righteousness. – 2 Timothy 4:6-8 – 6For I am already being poured out as a drink offering, and the time of my departure is at hand. 7I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. 8Finally, there is laid up for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will give to me on that Day, and not to me only but also to all who have loved His appearing.
A Battle and a March
The Christian life is a battle and a march. In this warfare there is no release; the effort must be continuous and preserving. It is by unceasing endeavor that we maintain the victory over the temptations of Satan… No one will be borne upward without stern, persevering effort in his own behalf. All must engage in this warfare for themselves; no one else can fight or battles. MH 453
How To Prepare To Meet Jesus At His Coming
Watch and be ready. – Matthew 24:42-44 – 42Watch therefore, for you do not know what hour your Lord is coming. 43But know this, that if the master of the house had known what hour the thief would come, he would have watched and not allowed his house to be broken into. 44Therefore you also be ready, for the Son of Man is coming at an hour you do not expect.
Live soberly, righteously, godly. – Titus 2:11-13 – 11For the grace of God that brings salvation has appeared to all men, 12teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly in the present age, 13looking for the blessed hope and glorious appearing of our great God and Savior Jesus Christ.
Be patient. – James 5:7 & 8 – 7Therefore be patient, brethren, until the coming of the Lord. See how the farmer waits for the precious fruit of the earth, waiting patiently for it until it receives the early and latter rain. 8You also be patient. Establish your hearts, for the coming of the Lord is at hand.
Abide in Christ. – 1 John 2:28 – And now, little children, abide in Him, that when He appears, we may have confidence and not be ashamed before Him at His coming.
